Claims of
realizing significant energy savings from a particular style of
kiln construction should be challenged. Comparing a 2.5 brick
kiln wall with and without 1 of backup insulating board does give
a calculated 32% difference in heat loss, but this wont
provide equivalent energy savings. This number is based on the
kiln holding at temperature continuously - not at all the
way potter's kilns are actually fired. And, it is only part
of the equation. The same program* that calculates the reduced
heat loss also calculates a corresponding increase in heat
storage. Heating a more heavily insulated kiln requires more
energy, just as firing a densely packed kiln does. In fact, for
typical firings, heat loss reduction achieved using additional
insulation is offset by the increased energy consumed in heating
the extra kiln mass.

What is the best kiln for you?
If you
normally fire up and down without soaking, consider single wall
construction; energy use to cone 6 is about the same as double
wall, cool-down possibilities are more flexible (quicker natural
cooling or controlled cooling using the Bartlett control) and
initial kiln cost is lower.
Euclid
single wall top loading kilns are built with 3 insulating brick
throughout to ensure superior and sustained structural rigidity
while providing optimum heating and cooling characteristics.
If you
fire crystalline glazes or soak for other reasons at high
temperature, double wall construction may result in lower
overall costs (energy cost savings versus the additional cost of
the kiln) over the life of the kiln.

R-153 & R-200 double-wall models feature sidewalls built with 2.5
insulating brick backed up with 1 fibre board. R-195 & R-280
models have 3 brick and 1 fibre board sidewalls. Floors and lids
for all models are built with 3" thick insulating brick.

Construction Notes
Elements:
40 years of making elements
has taught us a lot about what works and what doesn't. We've learned
that the best way to achieve even heat distribution is to use elements
that deliver more heat to the top and bottom of the kiln to compensate
for heat lost through the lid and floor.
Hinges and Lid:
Euclid's exclusive Halo Lid
feels so light it can be raised and lowered easily from almost any
position around its perimeter "halo" handle. Made from1/8" solid steel,
Euclid hinges are designed to hold the lid in the full upright position
without need for chains or lid supports and its unique floating design
relieves hinge/body stress by automatically adjusting to kiln brick
expansion.
Safety Latch:
When the lid latch is
disengaged, power is cut, eliminating any possibility of accidental
electric shock. It also doubles as a lid prop, allowing the kiln to fire
with the lid propped open. |
